Culture and Health: A Physician Perspective

Hello all! This is a great episode with Charles Alessi, and we cover a lot of important ground: culture, ethics, the physician and patient experience, information technology, and more. Recall that in the last episode, I spoke with Carlos Torelli about culture and health from a more academic perspective. In this episode of Respecting Health, we get to the physician perspective. What effect to cultural values have on the relationship between patient and physician? What is the physician experience in such an unpredictable environment? What about the physician’s values, goals, and ethical obligations? Does technology have an effect on any of these? We even discuss what medical schools are up to and some of the challenges they face.

My guest this time around is Dr. Charles Alessi, the Chief Clinical Officer at editohealth. Dr. Alessi is a physician based in London with over 35 years of experience in all aspects of policy and clinical practice in the UK and around the world. Prior to his role at editohealth, Dr. Alessi served as Global Chief Clinical Officer at HIMSS; Senior advisor to Public Health England; Chairman of the National Association of Primary Care, and served as a member of several World Health Organization panels focusing on neurosciences and dementia risk reduction.

He also recently co-authored Increase Your Brainability and Reduce Your Risk of Dementia, published by Oxford University Press. Here’s the Amazon UK link.

I hope you enjoy this episode. If we have him back as a guest, what questions would you ask Dr. Alessi? Let me know via email: feedback at respectinghealth.com, or scroll down and leave a comment below!
